The Sangeet Natak Akademi - India's national academy for music, dance and drama - is the first National Academy of the arts set-up by the Republic of India. It was created by a resolution of the (then) Ministry of Education, Government of India, dated 31 May 1952 notified in the Gazette of India of June 1952. The Akademi became functional the following year, with the appointment of its first Chairman, Dr P.V. Rajamannar, and the formation of its all-India council of representatives, the General Council. The first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad, inaugurated it on 28 January 1953 in a special function held in the Parliament House. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, then Union Minister for Education, in his opening address at the inauguration of the Akademi, said:
“India's precious heritage of music, drama and dance is one which we must cherish and develop. We must do so not only for our own sake but also as our contribution to the cultural heritage of mankind. Nowhere is it truer than in the field of art that to sustain means to create. Traditions cannot be preserved but can only be created afresh. It will be the aim of this Akademi to preserve our traditions by offering them an institutional form…”
“In a democratic regime, the arts can derive their sustenance only from the people, and the state, as the organized manifestation of the people's will, must, therefore, undertake … maintenance and development [of arts] as one of [its] first responsibilities…”
The Akademi's charter of functions was expanded along the original lines in 1961, when the Sangeet Natak Akademi was reconstituted by the Government as a society and registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 (as amended in 1957). These functions are set down in the Akademi's Memorandum of Association, adopted at its registration as a society on 11 September 1961.
Since its inception the Akademi has been functioning as the apex body of the performing arts in the country, preserving and promoting the vast intangible heritage of India's diverse culture expressed in the forms of music, dance and drama. In furtherance of its objectives the Akademi coordinates and collaborates with the governments and art academies of different States and Territories of the Union of India as also with major cultural institutions in the country. The Akademi establishes and looks after institutions and projects of national importance in the field of the performing arts. The National School of Drama, set up in 1959, was the first of their two national institutions of dance -- Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy in Imphal and Kathak Kendra (National Institute of Kathak Dance) in New Delhi - were set up in 1964 respectively. National Projects of Support to Kuttiyattam - the age-old Sanskrit theatre of Kerala - Chhau dances of eastern India and Sattriya traditions of Assam have been lauched subsequently. After ten years of intensive work under the Kutiyattam project, the UNESCO declared Kutiyattam as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in May 2001.It organizes performances of music, dance, and theatre.
The Akademi Awards are the highest national recognition conferred on eminent artistes. The Akademi also confers Fellowships and Scholarship, their numbers being restricted to 30 living recipients. The Fellowship and Awards caries purse money of Rs. 3,00,000/- and Rs. 1,00,000/- respectively besides a shawl and Tamrapatra..
To subsidize the work of institutions engaged in teaching, performing or promoting music, dance, or theatre; the Akademi gives grants-in-aid for research, documentation, and publishing in the performing arts; organizes and subsidizes seminars and conferences of subject specialists; documents and records the performing arts for its audio-visual archive.
The Akademi's audio-visual archive comprising audio/video tapes, photographs and films is the largest in the country and is extensively drawn upon by the scholars for research on the performing arts. The Akademi maintains a reference library consisting of books in English, Hindi and some regional languages. The Akademi has a gallery of musical instruments in Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi, where more than 250 musical instruments are displayed. It also has a documentation unit, which has collected and recorded works of maestros in the field of music, dance and theatre on audio and video to help researchers in the field and a gallery of musical instruments; and publishes literature on relevant subjects on a small scale.
As the apex body specializing in the performing arts of the country, the Akademi also renders advice and assistance to the Government of India in the task of formulating and implementing policies and programmes in the field. Additionally, the Akademi carries a part of the responsibilities of the state for fostering cultural contacts between various regions in India, and between India and the world.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi is presently an Autonomous Body of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and is fully funded by the Government for implementation of its schemes and programmes.
Aims and Objectives
• To co-ordinate the activities of regional or State Academies of music, dance and drama.
• To promote research in the fields of Indian music, dance and drama and for this purpose, to establish a library and museum, etc.
• To co-operate with such similar Academies as there may be and other institutions and associations for the furtherance of its objects and for the enrichment of Indian culture as a whole.
• To encourage the exchange of ideas and enrichment of techniques between the different regions in regard to the arts of music, dance and drama.
• To encourage the establishment of theatre centres, on the basis of regional languages, and co-operation among different theatre centers.
• To encourage the setting up of institutions providing training in the art of theatre, including instructions in actor's training, study of stage-craft and production of plays.
• To encourage and assist production of new plays by awarding prizes and distinctions.
• To publish literature on Indian music, dance and drama including reference works such as an illustrated dictionary or handbook of technical terms.
• To give recognition to and otherwise assist meritorious, theatrical organizations.
• To encourage the development of amateur dramatic activity, children's theatre, the open-air theatre and the rural theatre in its various forms.
• To revive and preserve folk music, folk dance and folk drama in different regions of the country and to encourage the development of community music, martial music and other types of music.
• To sponsor music, dance and drama festivals, seminars, conferences on an all-India basis and to encourage such regional festivals.
• To award prizes and distinctions and to give recognition to individual artistes for outstanding achievement in the fields of music, dance and drama.
• To take suitable steps for the maintenance of proper and adequate standards of education in music, dance and drama and with that object to organize research in the teaching of the said subjects.
• To foster cultural contacts between the different regions of the country and also with other countries in the fields of music, dance and drama.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi was established by the then Ministry of Education, Government of India by a Resolution dated the 31st of May, 1952 as the National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, and was inaugurated by the first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad on the 28th of January, 1953. It was created as the apex body in the country for carrying out the task of preservation and promotion of the performing arts of India. One of the important activities of the Akademi has been to give recognition and honours to artists as it would help in setting standards in these arts, and restore the art and artists to their rightful place in Independent India.
The institution of Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards is now more than fifty years old and the large body of practitioners, gurus and scholars in the performing arts honoured by the Akademi represent the nation’s highest achievement in music, dance and drama. The Awards in Hindustani and Carnatic music were instituted as early as 1951, even before the Akademi was set up and these were known as Presidential Awards. With the formation of the Akademi, the Awards came to be known as Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, and the investiture became the responsibility of the Akademi. The Presidential Awards for 1952 and 1953 were subsequently incorporated in the list of Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards.
The most prestigious and rare honour of Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (Akademi Ratna Sadasyata) was restricted to 30 eminent persons at any given time till last year. However, consequent upon the amendment of the Rules and Regulations in the meeting of the General Council on the 29th of January, 2010, ten more seats of Akademi Fellows have been increased to be filled up in a phased manner over five years – two seats per year. Hence, at present, there are only 32 living Fellows. The first Fellow of the Akademi was elected in 1954, and till date, the Akademi has honoured 123 eminent personalities as Akademi Fellows (Akademi Ratna).
The General Council of Sangeet Natak Akademi at its meeting held in New Delhi on the 29th of January and 12th of February, 2010 elected Shri Lalgudi G Jayaraman, eminent Carnatic Violinist from Chennai, Shri Shreeram Lagoo, eminent theatre actor from Pune, Ms Yamini Krishnamurti, eminent Bharatanatyam exponent from New Delhi, Shri Kamlesh Dutt Tripathi, eminent scholar of Sanskrit Theatre from Allahabad, Pandit Jasraj and Smt. Kishori Amonkar, both eminent Hindustani vocalists from Mumbai as Fellows of the Akademi. The Akademi Fellowship carries purse money of Rs 3.00 lakh in cash, a Tamrapatra and an Angavastram.
As regards the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, the number of awards to be given annually is 33 at present and, till date, over 1000 artists have been honoured. The Akademi Awards carries purse money of Rs 1.00 lakh in cash, a Tamrapatra and an Angavastram.
It is a matter of gratification that the Akademi Fellowship and Akademi Awards are recognized as the highest national honour conferred on practicing artistes, gurus and scholars, and have come to stay as the most coveted honours to which the artistes aspire. What makes these Akademi honours unique is perhaps the fact that they are conferred by a body consisting of specialists in different fields of performing arts and representatives from different States and Union Territories of the country. These honours in recognition of sustained and meritorious achievement and service to the performing arts have been receiving wide public attention. They also give an idea of the growth and development of the performing arts and our understanding of the same in the post-independent India.
Yet, in a democratic nation formed by a union of States and Territories having multiple cultural steams, the task of selecting artistes for recognition, representing the acme and essence of the nations’s creativity, is a difficult one. The task becomes all the more humbling when it is realized that, on one hand, we have inherited such a rich mass of tradition in this country of sub-continental dimensions the depth of which we are still trying to fathom, and, on the other hand, considerable creative energies were unleashed during the last six decades that interacted with the tradition as also with the influence from outside. In such a scenario, the Sangeet Natak Akademi is striving to ensure that its various schemes and programmes, particularly the prestigious honours that it confers, address themselves adequately to the tradition as well as its changing manifestations, and suitable strategies are adopted from time to time to withstand the juggernaut of globalization so that the variegated expressions of India’s cultural identity continue to flower and flourish.
Guidelines for Sangeet Natak Akademi Ratna and Akademi Puraskar
GUIDELINES for Election of Akademi Ratna (Akademi Fellow) & Selection of Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Awards)
Preamble:
Sangeet Natak Akademi honours each year eminent practitioners of music, dance and theatre as also those who serve these arts with distinction in other capacities. Akademi honours – Akademi Ratna and Akademi Puraskar- have been conferred from 1952, which not only symbolize the highest standard of excellence and achievements on a national basis but also recognize the sustained individual work of the highest professional order and contribution to the practice and appreciation of these arts throughteaching and scholarship.
1. Description of Akademi Ratna (Akademi Fellows) and Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Awards)
Akademi RATNA (Akademi FELLOWS)
The Akademi RAtna (Fellow) may be conferred, as per the existing constitutional provision under Rule 12 (vi) of the Rules and Regulations of the Akademi, which reads as under:
“To elect, by a majority of at least three-fourth of the members present and voting, artists of outstanding merit in the field of Music, Dance and Drama or such persons as have rendered outstanding service to the cause of music, dance & drama through their scholarship, research or original contributions as Fellows of the Akademi, provided they have been recommended for the elction by the Executive Board and provided further the number of Fellows shall at no time exceed thirty.”
Note: The General Council on 25 March 2003 however recommended that the number of Akademi Ratna (Fellow) may be restricted to 40 living persons if not 60 at any given time. This is subject to the approval of the Department of Culture, Government of India.
2. Akademi PURASKAR (Akademi AWARDS)
Akademi Awards may be conferred on eminent practitioners, gurus and scholars of music, dance and theatre for sustained individual achievement of high professional order.
3. Number and Categories of Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Awards)
The Akademi Awards may be conferred annually and the total number of Awards in a year shall not exceed 33.

Awards shall not exceed the specified number in each of the Field of activities and Categories there under. Where the categories are less than the number of Awards in a given Field, then efforts shall be made to get at least one Award to each category, but in no case should there be more than two Awards in any Category or sub category (except as earmarked in 3D). Diversion of Awards from one field to another would not be permissible.
Purse Money and other facilities for Akademi Ratna (Akademi Fellow) and Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Awards)
Akademi RATNA (Akademi FELLOW)
Each Akademi Ratna will carry honorarium of Rs 3,00,000/- (Rupees Three Lakhs only) in cash, a citation, an Angavastram and a Tamrapatra may also be given under the seal of Akademi and signature of its Chairman.
Akademi PURASKAR (Akademi AWARDS)
Each Akademi Puraskar (Awards) will carry an amount of Rs 1,00,000/- (Rupees One Lakh only) in cash, a Citation, an Angavastram and a Tamrapatra to be issued under the seal of Akademi and signature of its Chairman.
5. ELIGIBILITY
i) The Akademi Ratna and Awards are open to all regardless of nationality race, caste, religion, creed or sex.
ii) An association institution or organization is not eligible for Akademi Ratna or Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Award)
iii) No person below the age of 50 will ordinarily be considered for Akademi Ratna, a person considered for an Award will ordinarily be at least 35 years of age.
iv) A deceased person cannot be considered for Akademi Ratna or Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Award). oweHHowever, if the death of the person occurs subsequent to the decision of the General Council of the Akademi, the Akademi Ratna/Award will be conferred posthumously.
v) A person who has received an Award will not be eligible for the award in any category in subsequent years.
vi) A recipient of Akademi Ratna will not be eligible for an Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Award) at any stage.
vii) The members of the General Council will not be eligible for being considered for Akademi Ratna (Fellow) or Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Award) and they may be informed about this provision in writing at the time of their nomination/election to the Executive Board/General Council.
viii) If two or more persons are jointly engaged in artistic pursuit in any of the categorized area under consideration, the Award may be given to them jointly.
ix) Akademi Ratna and Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Awards) do not pertain to any single work or achievement but to significant and lasting contribution on a sustained basis over a period of time.
x) Canvassing in any form will be treated as disqualification.
6. PROCEDUER FOR NOMINATION AND SELECTION:
(A) Akademi RATNA (Akademi FELLOW)
i) Competence to submit proposals for Akademi Ratna shall be enjoyed by:
a) Ratna Sadasya (Akademi Fellows)
b) Members of the General Council of the Akademi
Note: No new nominations would be considered either by the Executive Board or by the General Council after expiry of the last date. However, Chairman, SNA will have the powers to propose new names for consideration of the Executive Board/General Council even at the time of the meeting.
6 (B) Akademi PURASKAR (Akademi AWARDS)
i) Competence to submit proposals for Akademi Awards shall be enjoyed by:
a) Ratna Sadasya (Akademi Fellows)
b) Members of the General Council of the Akademi
c) Chairman / Presidents of State Akademies
d) Secretaries in the States / Union Territories of the Department of Culture.
e) Heads of Universities/Deans of the Performing Arts.
f) Eminent scholars, experts in the field of performing arts.
g) The names recommended by the Executive Board and not accepted by the General Council in previous five year will automatically be listed for the short listing along with the fresh nominations received.
ii) Every Year the Akademi shall invite nominations for Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Awards) by a specified date and the nominations received in accordance with clause 6 (i) will be placed before the Executive Board for short listing of the names for consideration by the General Council. No new nominations would be considered either by the Executive Board or by the General Council after expiry of the last date. However, Chairman, SNA will have the powers to propose new names for consideration of the Executive Board/General Council even at the time of the meeting.
iii) Efforts should be made to have unanimity in the Executive Board and the General Council but in case unanimity cannot be reached then the opinion of the 3/4th members present shall be called as provide in Clause 12(vi) of the Rules and Regulations of the Akademi. The decision of the General Council will be final and no appeal or protest can be made against it.
iv) Persons recommended by the Executive Board in the preceding five years but not selected by the General Council may be considered in the following years.
6(C) Members of the Executive Board, General Council and officers of the Akademi will not reveal or make public the discussions, deliberations, and proceedings of the General Council in connection with the election of Akademi Ratna and selection of the Akademi Award except with the prior approval of the Chairman, SNA.
7. PRESENTATION CEREMONY
i) The presentation of Akademi Ratna and Puraskar (Awards) will be made at a ceremony in New Delhi or any other place as decided by the Chairman of the Akademi.
ii) The President of India/Vice-President of India/Prime Minister of India or any eminent personality in the field will be invited to confer the honours.
iii) The Akademi Ratna and Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Awards) shall be invited to receive the honours in person. As far as possible each Akademi Ratna and Awardee will be invited to give public performance at a festival of music, dance and theatre to be organized by the Akademi following the Puraskar (Award) presentation ceremony.
8. GENERAL
The Executive Board of the Akademi will have the right to amend any clause or clauses in the guidelines.
Tagore Akademi Ratna and Tagore Akademi Puraskar
As a part of the ongoing commemoration of the 150" Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Sangeet Natak Akademi, National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, the apex body of performing arts in the country, decided to institute a one-time honour of Tagore Samman to be awarded to 100 persons of the age of 75 years and above who have made significant contribution in the field of performing arts. The proposal of the Akademi was approved by the National Implementation Committee headed by Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Minister of Finance, and the Ministry of Culture. It was further agreed that out of 100 Sammans, 50 may be at par with the Akademi Fellow (with purse money of Rs 3 Lacs) and remaining 50 Sarnmans at par with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (with purse money of Rs 1 Lac).
The General Council of the Sangeet Natak Akademi at its meeting held on 13- 14 December 201 1 at New Delhi unanimously elected fifty (50) eminent personalities in the field of performing arts as Tagore Akaderni Rwtna and selected fifty (50) personalities for Akaderni Tagore Puraskar. Yuva Puraskar (Prizes to Young Artistes)
Sangeet Natak Akademi decided to institute "Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar" from the year 2006 to be awarded to artists who have shown/demonstrated conspicuous talent in the fields of music, dance and drama. Young outstanding practitioners upto the age of 35 years are eligible to be considered for the Yuva Puraskar every year. The age as on the date of nomination received will be reckoned from the 1st April of the year of the Puraskar. Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar carries a purse money of Rs 25,000/- (Rupees twenty five thousand only). The Yuva Puraskar is presented at a special ceremony, presided over by the Chairman, Sangeet Natak Akademi. The investiture of Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for the year 2009 and festival of music, dance and drama featuring some of the recipients was held from 10-17 August 2010. Guidelines were made in the same line of Akademi Awards. However, in the General Council Meeting held on 29th of June, 2010, it was decided that revision of the present Guidelines would be made before inviting the nomination of Yuva Puraskar for 2010.
Guidelines for Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puruskar
Preamble:
Sangeet Natak Akademi has decided to institute “Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar “ from the year 2006 to be awarded to artists who have shown/demonstrated conspicuous talent in the fields of music, dance and drama. Young outstanding practitioners upto the age of 35 years will be eligible to be considered for Yuva Puraskar every year. Age as on the date of nomination received will be reckoned from 1st April of that year.
1. Number and Fields/ Categories of Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar
Yuva Puraskar will be given annually and the total number of Yuva Puraskar in a year shall not exceed 33.
The Yuva Puraskar may be given in the following five Fields of activity:
A) Music
B) Dance
C) Theatre
D) Other Traditional/Folk/Tribal/Dance/Music/Theatre and Puppetry
E) Contribution/Scholarship in Performing Arts
Yuva Puraskar may be given in accordance with numbers and Categories mentioned below:

2E. Field of Activity: Contribution/Scholarship in Performing arts (Number of Yuva Puraskar – 1)
3. Yuva Puraskar shall not exceed the specified number in each of the field of activities and categories there under where the categories are less than the number of Yuva Puraskar in a given field, then efforts shall be made to get at least one Puraskar to each category, but in no case should there be more than two Puraskar in any Category or sub-category (except as earmarked in 2D). Diversion of Yuva Puraskar from one field or category to another would not be permissible.
4. PRIZE MONEY
Each Yuva Puraskar will carry a prize money of Rs. 25,000/- (Rupees twenty five thousand only) and a tamrapatra to be issued under the seal of Akademi and signature of its Chairman.
5. ELIGIBILITY
i) “Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar” is open to all Indian nationals upto 35 years of age. Puraskar would not be given posthumously
ii) A person who has received the Puraskar once will not be eligible for the same Puraskar under any other field/category.
iii) The members of the General Council will not be eligible for being considered for the Yuva Puraskar
6. PROCEDURE FOR NOMINATION AND SELECTION:
i) The following will have the right to nominate names for Yuva Puraskar :
a) Akademi Ratna Sadasya and Awardees
b) Members of the General Council of the Akademi
c) Chairman/Presidents of State Akademies
d) Secretaries in the States/Union territories of the Departments of Culture
e) Heads of Departments of Performing Arts recognized Universities/ Deemed Universities
f) Eminent scholars, experts in the field of performing arts.
The nominations by the above authorities may be accompanied with reasoned justification together with full documentation including proof of age etc.
ii) Every Year the Akademi shall invite nominations for “Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar” by a specified date and the nominations received in accordance with clause 6(i) will be placed before the Executive Board for short listing of the names for consideration by the General Council. No new nominations would be considered either by the Executive Board or by the General Council after expiry of the last date. However, Chairman of the Akademi may propose or recommend new names should the need arise in any specified field or area where suitable nominations have not been made or recommended within the specified date.
iii) Efforts should be made to have unanimity in the Executive Board and the General Council but in case unanimity cannot be reached then the opinion of the 3/4 members present shall be called. The decision of the General Council will be final and no appeal or protest can be made against it.
iv) Members of the Executive Board, General Council and officers of the Akademi will not reveal or make public the discussions, deliberations, and proceedings of the General Council in connection with the selection of “Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar” unless authorized by Chairman, SNA to do so.
7. PRESENTATION CEREMONY
i) The presentation of Yuva Puraskar will be made at a Ceremony in New Delhi or any other place as decided by the Chairman of the Akademi.
ii) The recipients of Yuva Puraskar shall be invited to receive the Puraskar in person. As far as possible each recipient of Yuva Puraskar will be invited to give public performance at the festival of music, dance and theatre to be organized by the Akademi following the Puraskar Presentation Ceremony of at a later date.
8. GENERAL
*The Executive Board of the Akademi will have the right to amend any clause or clauses in the guidelines.
